Seattle, the invitation for Dinah

He is a man of his word, and one more than capable of figuring out how to get people in and out of his world with little issue. That's why he and Dinah emerge from the third stall of the Unisex bathroom of the Seattle Public Library. It's clean, quiet, and most importantly of all, devoid of security cameras.

"Be this portal ever so humble."

Dinah does not colour. "And not outside? Isn't iot outside and the greenhouse where all reported murders have happened?"

"I don't know where all the cameras are, I've seen them in the Garage though, and on some of the rafters in the Bar proper." Beauford says conversationally. "But those cameras were installed long before the murders. Apparently there was a nasty portal breach in the main bar area, and not long after that, two giant robots had themselves a big goddamn deathmatch in the Garage."

If he looks like he kind of wishes he could have SEEN that deathmatch...but really, this is the edited version. He's telling it like someone who's lived and witnessed Bar weirdness for years.

"It took Security too long to realized what was happening before it was well into a destroy-all-property brawl, so some guy who worked in installing security cameras paid part of his tab by installing them."

"Good," Dinah says nonchalently, blowing into her gloves against the cold. "A little tighter police work around the place would be a good idea."

"Damn skippy. Now if people would just read the bulletin board for warnings about werewolves and the lunar phases, I'm sure there would be a lot less headaches for Security." Beauford rolls his eyes, still with a wry smile as they come up to the bus stop. Far, far overhead, Dinah might catch a glimpse of someone flying overhead, just for a second.

Then it's just the noise and wheeze of the bus coming up from the block over and pulling up to the curb, through the thick snow and ice.

Dinah gives the flying person a casual glance as she digs into her pockets for change.

"How much is the fare?"

If Beauford wants to stop her from using 1980s coinage, now might be a good time.

"I got it covered," Beauford grins, pulling a card out of his coat pocket and swiping it through a reader near the inside of the door, once, twice. "Buscard, cheaper than cash, and I can refill it online."

Dinah looks mildly stricken.

"Online as in computers? As in everyone has to use those things?"

She might be getting some odd looks from some of the people on the bus now as she says that aloud. Beauford winces a little giving her a sideways glance.

Dinah plays it up a little, shuddering visibly and winking at a nearby child.

To Beauford, she raises a challenging eyebrow. It's hardly the strangest thing she could have said.

Once they've gotten seated next to each other in one of the seats, Dinah getting the window, he whispers.

"Computers have become almost ubiquitous in the last 30 years...there isn't a kid in the US who doesn't own their own laptop computer that could fit in the space of a paper notebook."

"And technophobes exist" comes the assurance of someone who knows people. "Some people still don't like cars."

So leave her alone; she's watching the traffic. Some of those vehicles are sweet.

"Fair enough"

He doesn't have room to talk, he still writes out journals by hand and his identity online is an extremely well-made falsehood.

"Hell, I don't even like airplanes...get freaked riding in em."

Dinah gives him a sideways look, dying to ask another question.

"I've only been in a plane twice," she admits. She doesn't need to, after all. "To Japan and back. What is it that you don't like?"

"It's not the heights, or the flying, I've hang-glided before without a single jitter, and gone spelunking when I was a kid." By far more risky ventures. "But you put me into a plane or a jet and I'm like this.."

It's a short turn from the calm man, and he's clearly having fun pretending that he's in an airplane seat.

"'What's that stewdardess, oh no I'm quite fine, no I'm not constipated, eh? no not my first time flying, just always like this!'"

Dinah laughs at him mockingly. "I bet there's a great story behind that!"

"Oh that was the first and last time I ever flew in a plane, and that was going to college." Beauford laughs, relaxing back. "I can't explain it, but sitting in a plane freaks me out completely."

"Makes my computer thing easier to live with," Dinah says lightly.

"It's probably easier to live with than my total inability to cook."

"Why do you have a thing about computers, if you don't mind me asking?"

"Not a clue," Dinah says, laughing at herself. "I just don't trust them. They're too smart for inanimate objects."

"Pffft, they only do what they're told or programmed to do." Beauford laughs then pauses. "Granted, there are a couple of Robotis Americanus Sapiens living in my world."

Dinah gives him a smirk that says mine too. "Robots are different, though," she says. "They know they're people."

[basic_powers]

"True, True." Beauford nods, "I know there's one who regularly does information diving to make sure judicial records in Kansas are kept in neat order."

"...I have no idea what that would involve," she admits.

"The patience of a saint."

Dinah laughs out loud. "Doesn't everything involving the judical system?"
