Well, since having that lovely cafeteria date with Martha Jones, Tyler now knows just a bit more about this world than he did when he arrive. He knows that UNIT was created some time ago to combat aliens threats, the man who founded it being called 'The Brigadier' and that Martha joined UNIT because of a job offer right after medical school.

He's also learned that he's not to leave the base without an escort.

What Martha learned was the story that he's sticking to, and some minor details. Tyler was mostly raised by his uncle Ray, the mushroom samples were going for two different sorts of research, toxin and body enhancement. She's also learned that the contents of the sample case will be destroyed if someone tampers with the box.

She also got to see Tyler's reaction to being told he can't leave the base.

Which leads everyone to this current universe, planet, continent, time and location, with a bored and cabin-feverish young man staring up at the ceiling of the barracks and debating the worth od trying to escape using everything he has.

Moon Shadow stood holding on to the passenger seat in the Bronco. He really hoped those two teenagers they had bought this car from wouldn't tell anyone who they gave it to... and that Revenant wasn't hurt too bad, because he was the only one here with any experience in making a clean getaway.

It's Friday morning, and right now...

The bags are packed, the extra money is in a special pocket, there's no one invading anytime soon, he has no real training, so it's a little unusual for Tyler to be in this house.

It's not the usual routine and it's great, and because in a few minutes the 'family' car pulls up into the garage and Ray will be coming to visit.

"...6:56..." The hard part was not bouncing off the walls while staring down the clock. Ray had to come exactly at 7 am.

"Ray! it's 7!!" Tyler called through the open doorway, which had formerly been the broom closet. "Come on!"

In all the confusion at the school Tyler had been able to slip away un-noticed after getting Ambriel back inside. That was the easy part, the hard part was running flat out to the home that the Revenant had been sending him to for picking up new gear to practice with, which was over 7 miles away from the school.

By the time he got there, after avoiding cars and grownups who would have stopped him, Tyler stood over in the driveway wheezing and privately thanking Milliways for the Mr. Shephard's PT training. It was probably the only thing that had kept him from collapsing in the driveway. Then he felt the Revenant communicator vibrating in his back pocket and took it out, fiddling the earpiece in.

As soon as the rain had stopped it was time to hang the flag back up again, and repeat the entire process.

It wasn't much better the second time around, and Tyler wondered for a moment if he could do this on his own. Then he could get out of social studies without Zodon pestering him.

"Back up it goes. I hope it doesn't rain again."

There were a lot of nice things about taking courses above ground right away in the morning. This semester, Tyler had been getting his reading and english classes right next to each other in the morning, which in itself was pretty good, even if he had to share it with Zodon. Having Ambriel made up a lot for having Zodon, it meant the techno-terror-tot in the holographic fatkid would have a hard time ruining his day.

Even if the sky suddenly got dark out and it started raining, it still wasn't all that bad.

"Tyler, Ambriel, Zodon, since you have flag duty, would you be so kind as to go outside and take down the flag since it's starting to rain?"

It's a cloudy, warm day on the playground.
Oh, little town in U.S.A
It would be a great day for playing, except no one's there.
The time has come to see
All the things you think you are

They're inside having class, right now, everyone else except for him.
But where were you when it all came down on me...
And one other person, the one he's running from.
Once upon a time at the foot of a great mountain, there was a town where the people known as Happyfolk lived.
All Tyler can feel is dread, dread and lost hope that the other guy chasing him would relearn what he knew before.
Their very existence a mystery to the rest of the world, obscured as it was by great clouds.
There isn't any sound as Charles Brigman teleports in front of his path, grinning and reaching out to grab him.
Here they played out their peaceful lives, innocent of the litany of excess and violence that was growing in the world below
It's a bare and thin twist, he can feel the air as the bigger boy only just missed grabbing onto him.
To live in harmony with the spirit of the mountain called Monkey was enough.
For what purpose, he doesn't know, all he knows is that he has to get away. To warn someone, the cops, Buzz Aldren, Will Smith, The Earth Defense League, ANYONE...
Then one day Strangefolk arrived in the town.
"You know, I have to thank you for this, Ty-de-bowl.." The voice came from farther away, and then someplace else nearby. "Thanks to you I found someone who's made me even better at this.."
They came in camouflaged, hidden behind dark glasses, and no one noticed them; they only saw shadows. You see, without the truth of the eyes, the Happyfolk were blind.
...Who could he mean... Tyler didn't have time to think, Charles spoke again close by. It registered too late that the bully's voice was too close by as the hand grabbed his arm and pulled it back hard, twisting and hurting it. There was no one there to scream to for help.
Falling out of aeroplanes and hiding out in holes
Waiting for the sunset to come, people going home

"In fact...I think he'd like to see you again..."
Jump out from behind them, and shoot them in the head
He didn't have time to get free, the teleportation happened in an instant and he was thrown down onto a rocky solid ground hard enough to jar the air out of him. And painted on the ground in front of him was the familiar four-square grid...
Now everybody dancing the dance of the dead
= Hello there dear boy...a pleasure to meet you again= Came the metallic voice just on the other side of the grid.
The daaaance of the dead
No.
The daaaance of the dead
No, he knew that voice, he knew who it belonged to now, after his talks with the Rainmaker Students. After finding out about Lyle's history report. Tyler looked up from the ground into the aged face of the man, the origional Rainmaker project. His mouth felt dry as he tried talking to him. "Harold? It's me.."
In time, the Strangefolk found their way into the higher reaches of the mountain, and it was there that they found the caves of unimaginable sincerity and beauty..
Harold Nelson's face was completely blank and staring at him passively, as if Tyler wasn't really..No. It was more like Harold wasn't really there, like the kid Tyler had travelled through time with was gone. = He won't hear you lad, really, Harold's gotten to be very good at hearing only what I tell him to..= The metal head, cradled in one of the man's arm chuckled. = It wasn't that hard to find our way back here, with no government officials looking for us anymore. I must say, though, I was most surprised at what else your school contained...=
By chance, they stumbled upon the place where all good souls come to rest.
He wanted to run away, but where could he run to, there was nothing but that void surrounding the rock of challenge. Charles reappeared to the other side of Dr. Irons' head, grinning. = Our young friend, Mr. Brigman here was most helpful in getting us inside, once Harold properly helped him along. =
The Strangefolk, they coveted the jewels in these caves above all things, and soon they began to mine the mountain, it's rich seam fueling the chaos of their own world.
= But enough with pleasantries... Mr. Powers. =
Meanwhile, down in the town, the Happyfolk slept restlessly, their dreams invaded by shadowy figures digging away at their souls.
No.
Every day, people would wake and stare at the mountain.
Harold's freehand came up, a new glow surrounding it.
Why was it bringing darkness into their lives?
"No!" Tyler put up his hands to try and futily try and block the energy. "NO!!"
And as the Strangefolk mined deeper and deeper into the mountain, holes began to appear, bringing with them a cold and bitter wind that chilled the very soul of the Monkey.
= Oh but yes my dear boy, I must make you an asset to my group... You won't have to worry, as long as you do what I want you to...you'll have no worries at all...=
For the first time, the Happyfolk felt fearful for, they knew that soon the Monkey would stir from its deep sleep.
He felt that fire and pressure inside of his entire skeleton, pressing hardest inside of his head, like that halloween all over again, except amplified by Harold's power. "NO! STOP, PLEASE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING!!!" He felt himself screaming.
Then there came a sound.
= HAROLD! STOP! STOP THIS INSTA- The voice was cut off as a much stronger, burning light broke from the youngest child present there, and Tyler could hear their screaming in his head as everything ripped loose...
Distant first, it grew into castrophany so immense it could be heard far away in s-sP-SP-SPACE-CE-Ce-e...
He could hear all the worlds connected to the rock of challenge, he could hear the other hims in the distance and the sound of two voices laughing. The lords of Order and Chaos
There were no screams. There was no time. The mountain called Monkey had spoken. There was only fire. And then, nothing.
Tylers started screaming.
"From what I see of your mind...you may be the most powerful Tyler of us all..."

---------------

He woke up screaming.
Hush little baby, don't say a word
And nevermind that noise you heard

It took him a moment to realize he was in his room at Milliways.
It's just the beast under your bed,
in your closet, in your heeaaad

A few minutes later, the room was empty, plush autobot, lightsaber and pet raptor taken downstairs. The bed was a mess of tangled sheets. There would be no more sleep in here tonight.

Giving the girls in his classes handmade cards had seemed like a good idea, and it had turned out very nicely for him. Little too nice, given that by lunch time he'd gotten 5 surprise hugs, been given 4 cupcakes, 6 funsize bars of candy, 2 wedgies and cupcakes that would have been numbers five and six rubbed into his hair and shoved into the back of his shorts respectively.

Ron had asked him why he'd done that and gotten the box of valentine's with his parents on the box to him. That particular conversation would've ended more awkwardly if Ron hadn't offered to run downstairs and get him some clothes to change into.

By the end of the day his locker had more valentines inside of it, and in unpacking it, there was a sudden rush of air followed by a noise like that of a zipper being opened and closed quickly, just as all the notes went into the air around him.

He really wanted to bang his head against the wall, but then the PS238 nurse would ask how he had hurt his head again.

"Aww...are you upset no one's sent you any valentines yet?"

Tyler only half-listened to Suzi and Zodon bantering back and forth about the holiday coming up. Every kid in both halves of the school was getting excited about it. They were too busy discussing to notice the slip of folded lavender paper that fell from Tyler's above-ground locker. Looking back at the two kids arguing he purposefully knocked over a couple of notebooks and slid the paper in with his other things. He'd read it later, in the privacy of his own room.

The one he has at Milliways.

Dear journal,
Miss Squirrel's offering to teach me how to box today, since I have a lot of free time around the lair...

"Okay now just put your feet like this and keep your weight on the balls of your feet, Short Pants."

"Kay." Obediently Tyler did so moving closer to the punching bag set up on a spring and looking towards the fearless fighting female for further guidance.

"Awright now just lean forward and give that punching bag a good left jab."
-phunt!- -sproooong- "Hey I-"
-grooonk- -thunt!- -thump-

Tyler looked at the punching bag on his butt, bewildered with a glove-covered hand going to his right eye.

"Uhh..Boss? We got any icepacks?"

Dear journal,
I've been here over two weeks now. I miss TV and books so much right now. I caught myself wishing Cecil or even Zodon were here.

So far no luck on the coaster portal working yet, but they keep saying give it time.

Meanwhile I've been exploring the Lair and some of the caves whenever Miss Squirrel and Mr. Red Panda have both been out. So far nothing much except for some tubes and the workshop, which has a lot of gizmos and other things in it that might be interesting later.

Soon as they're out I'm going to take a flashlight and start exploring the caverns and tunnels.

Tyler, while being very well-behaved and trustworthy for a child his age and size, does have limits to his patience and his ability to put up with the same routine day after day. After the moment he doesn't hear either of the masked do-gooders talking in the lair or in any space where the sounds would carry to it. Scooping up his backpack he started along one of the tunnels to see where it'd come out.

Dear Journal,
I've been staying with Miss Squirrel and the Red Panda for a couple of days now. I don't think the Red Panda believes that I did take out two armed goons with a can of beans. That's okay though, because then he doesn't ask questions about how I did it.

Living in the 1930's isn't so bad, the food's better than the cafeteria food...which really isn't saying much. But at least it doesn't get away under its own power. Speaking of, they haven't asked what the putty egg is yet.

The clothes here are weird. Miss Squirrel brought me a couple of sets of clothes, since the one I was wearing was starting to smell a little ripe. I don't think they've invented elastic waistbands yet, so I've got to button everything up. Oh. And suspenders will give you a wedgie when you sit down if they're on too tight.

Mr. Red Panda is also letting me practice my lightsaber katas, I didn't bring it along with me, but I think he gets the gist of it being a sword made out of light. I don't have much for classes, or homework here, so I've got a lot of time to practice.

That's all for now, I can hear Miss Squirrel and the Red Panda coming in, so I'd better get back to bed before they come in here...

With that, the little boy tucked up his notebook, turned off the reading lamp and quietly scampered back to the storage cave that was his room for now. For a few minutes he listened to the echo-distorted sounds of the masked do-gooders discussing something that sounded important. Then, tucking the notebook under the sleeping bag on his cot, he crawled into bed and settled down for the night.

Maybe tomorrow Dr. C would figure out how to send him home.

One could always hope.

Tyler stared at the box sitting in front of him on the bed. There was nothing spectactularly interesting about it...except that it contained the remains of the super-armor his parents had made him wear on his first day. And the fact that he had to put it on very soon.

Preferably, if the PA system buzzer was anything to go by...with in the next ten minutes.

Ten minutes before the parents started coming in for their teacher conferences.

In those next minutes his parents were going to be coming for their monthly visit...and then all of the same questions would be asked.

Again.

"I cannot wait to graduate school."

After an examination at the musuem, it wasn't long before Tyler was politely blindfolded and put into the backseat of the car. It isn't anything new, and he really understands the need for secrecy, even if currently he has all the directional and navigational ability of a drunk seagull in this town, the duo DOES need to keep their lair (or is it lairs?) a secret.

He's still trying to figure out everything else aside from getting home in his head as the drive starts, going over the times in his head. He left in the afternoon, was still on afternoon time when it was late-night in Toronto and unfortunately despite Constable Parker's best efforts, he didn't sleep well last night.

Suffice to say, the boy is jetlagged to heck and back as the adrenaline rush of finding out his friend is ok wears off.

Which is why, much later (after another musical sting) the boy is fast asleep in the back of the car and snoring into his elbow as the car pulls into the lair.

Somehow, despite, or maybe because of his own fear at being trapped in this time and place, Tyler managed to fall asleep on the cot of Cell #18 last night, curled up with his backpack for a pillow.

Jake and Sully haven't noticed who else is in the cells farther down, by now having awakened with the groans of people who have very bad headaches and a desire to consume a lot of asprin.

It's 8 am...and all's quiet for now.
basic_powers: (upset)
For several moments Tyler waited, watching the shadows and the hallway for any signs that the police officer was coming back at all to talk to him. After a few minutes he was entirely certain that the coast was clear.

Never in all of his life had he been so very grateful that he'd gotten a backpack with more secret compartments than a chinese puzzle box. He dug around, fingers brushing past the daffy putty egg and it's controller, and the keychain that activated the armor boost, until his hands found the compact long-distance communicator and headset. He had no idea what the range on this thing was in this world but...he had to at least try.

He checked once again to see if anyone in the shadows, windows, or hallway was watching before he flipped open the little video screen and tucked the bluetooth set into his ear.

...here goes nothing.

He tried turning the dial until he didn't get as much static anymore...

"Hello? Mr. Revenant?"

Nothing...except more static.

"Mr. Revenant...come in please..."

Again...nothing.

"Mr. Creepy guy from the castle?"

"...Hall of mirrors?"

"...anybody?"

Finally something did come in..and Tyler strained to hear what was being said, hoping it was someone..anyone.

~Hello my baby, hello my honey, hello my ragtime gal.... !!~

For a while he listened to what was coming in over the communicator...before turning it off, closing it up and tucking it back into the backpack. Then he hugged his knees to his chest and buried his face in them talking to himself very quietly, trying not to freak out and cry.

He had never felt more alone. ...no. He had once. But he was well and truly alone here.

"I will not fear. Fear is the mind-killer, the spark-destroyer that brings total obliteration. Where fear leads I do not follow; where fear forbids, I go as needed. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain...."

Tyler jolted, jumping up at the sudden touch of someone's hand on his shoulder as Enzo was inside the tree house. He fell forward, face first into a puddle of grim and slush, and got up coughing to look back at what had grabbed him when he saw his surroundings.

He wasn't near the treefort anymore.

I'm pretty sure I'm not in Milliways anymore... Tyler thought as he looked around, wiping the muck off of his clothes. He was in some kind of back alley, between two old brick and wood buildings with a bunch of junk, paper and debris collected in the corners. Pretty sure this isn't Kansas either.

There were voices, people talking outside of the alleyway, he could hear them, but not make out what they were saying.

I bet I've fallen into the past. AGAIN. Tyler thought to himself creeping up towards the voices slowly to see if they were friendly.

"Thank you again for letting me come sleep over, Mrs. Holmes."

Tyler smiled up at the adult woman, shouldering his backpack. All he had gotten from the Ministry of Extraordinary Threats was a note saying he should try and enjoy what he could of Halloween as best he could until his next Door.

"Really, it's not that much of a fuss, Tyler, I'm glad Cecil's been making more.." She paused, not to say her boy Cecil was strange really, but ...normal wasn't something he did very well. "... friends lately. Did you bring your halloween costume for tonight?"

"Uh-huh, I'm gonna be Ray Stantz!"

He held up the box containing all of his costume parts, and turned on the PKE meter to show her.

"Oh how adorable!" Claire Holmes smiled over the costume. "If you had told Cecil I would have re-fitted his costume for him, this is one of his favorite movies!"

"Yeh, it's one of mine too." He replied smiling on the inside as he went into the bathroom to change. If only because I know the people portrayed personally...

"Well if you want to, you can watch the movie upstairs with Cecil and Malphast, eating marshmallows."

Tyler paused, zipping up the jumpsuit and grabbing the PKE meter as he started listening to the noises inside of the house. Eventually a dull roaring noise came from upstairs with an occompanying rise of the needle.

"CECIL! Turn down the volume!" She was yelling up the stairs to the room, as Tyler trotted out of the bathroom.

"I'd better get up there..." Tyler said as there was a clattering upstairs of kids moving around, heading up the stairs. "Malphast's parents have never let him watch scary movies before.."

He got into the room just in time to see a few marshmallow tentacles slip out of the open window and out into the neighborhood. The room was in disarray and there was a torn plastic bag stuck to Malphast's head. "I apologize, friend Tyler... my mind wandered."

All three of them went to the open window to look outside as the movie played in the background.

"Look! Over there!"

"What is it?!"

"Oh nooo..."

"What did you do, Ray?!?"

The tentacled marshmallow monstrosity screeched in the night as it squirmed down the street.

"...well... at least it's not the Stay Puft marshmallow man."
