April 14th
Original Rainmaker Site, exact location unknown, Iowa.
3:30 pm

Minutes later, after the children went in with Doctor Irons, the high-end family car pulled up to park by remote. Seconds later, Tyler got out, hiding behind the car door to peer up at the abandoned and heavily damaged former institution warily...

"I'm here."
.
.
.

"So... now what?"

"Follow him!" cries Lyle. He grabs randomly at Zach's shoulder (receiving a dubious look in return), but he's addressing Moon Shadow. "He's going to need you! This place will be destroyed if you don't get out there and help!"

"Go!" Lyle insists. "I don't remember everything from before Harold turned my 'knowing' off, but I do remember that! Go!"

Seconds Later...

"Release the controls, you Gothic acrobat!" commands Doctor Irons through the helicopter's loudspeaker. "I'll eventually decrypt the security codes, but if you give me the password now, I'll refrain from vaporizing the building."

The Revenant is dangling from his grappler below the chopper, and ascending rapidly. "This acrobat thinks he can knock you senseless before you can unlock the radio presets, let alone the missile launchers!"

"I've gained access to the weapons systems," Irons informs the Revenant, now right outside the cockpit. "Last chance."

Drat. He can't risk the children.

"Fine. You win. The code is—"

Well. That works. It's not going to result in a smooth landing, though.

The Revenant lets his grapple-line out while holding onto the new one, sliding down to join Moon Shadow on the car. "The copter is programmed to fly in circles if the security lockdown is in place," he warns him. "Unfortunately, having a car attached to it is probably going to throw its gyros off a bit. Hang on!"

Whum... whum... whum... The vehicular bolas wobbles its way lower and lower.

Harold leads the children out of the building, the conscious carrying the unconscious with varying levels of difficulty. There is neither point nor appeal in staying here.

They're just in time to see the car hit the ground with a CRUMP! Then the helicopter's blades slice into the ground a few times before it makes proper impact.

Then the whole mess explodes, so close together that it's hard to say which vehicle goes up first.

"Hey, kid," says Harold, shifting the unconscious Vern to one arm so he can help the costumed boy out of his cocoon, "what happened to your friend and Doctor Irons?"

[identity profile] npc238.livejournal.com 2009-05-21 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
"There!" interrupts Lyle, pointing.

"I think we'll need to commandeer your vehicle to get everyone home, Harold," says the Revenant, emerging (with his usual quiet drama) from behind said van. "I'm afraid Junior, here, totaled the family car."

[identity profile] npc238.livejournal.com 2009-05-21 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
"No problem," says Harold, ignoring this. "It's the least I can do before... I go to jail, I guess. Kidnapping's a felony, isn't it?"

Now that Irons is gone, he understands everything he just did. It's not pleasant.

"Doctor Irons made you do it," Lyle tells him. "He told you lies about our Rainmaker program, hoping you'd get close to people who might make him a new body or fix his old one. I helped you so you could help me."

[identity profile] npc238.livejournal.com 2009-05-21 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
"But I don't get how—"

"When you turn off my powers, I can look at everything and everyone, for a while, and just see... the surface: no possible futures, or the past, or anything. It's... peaceful."

Metahumans exist who can change their size, shape, color, and density, but this is the strangest transformation yet: spooky, omniscient Lyle Sutton, become nothing more than a happy little boy.

"And even if this is the only time I ever get to feel normal, I want to thank you, Harold."

"I hate to break this up," puts in the Revenant, "but we need to go, now. My communications gear was damaged beyond repair, and I can't stop Cranston from calling the authorities. They probably won't be the most sympathetic people to me or Harold. And..." They can't see him wince, but he clutches at his side and leans against the van. "...I think I've got several internal injuries that just won't... keep quiet... oooohhh..."
