Time After Tyler: Alternate Mirrors Part 1

Okay... it was go straight down the hall and take a right at the big fountain, according to the weird guy on the com, Tyler thought as he wandered around down the halls. He turned accordingly, into a huge hall lined with mirrors. He wondered what could be so important there. Aside from the reflections wearing different clothes there was nothing here to...

He double-took and looked closer. The nearest reflection was wearing some kind of slightly anti-heroish getup, a jumpsuit with shoulder pads and those ugly sunglasses that went all the way around your head. It moved the same way he did, so it had to be a reflection, but he was pretty darn certain that he was still wearing a t-shirt and jeans. Tentatively, Tyler reached forward to touch the mirror.

Something hit him in the back, hard enough to knock him off his feet. As he got back up, he snarled at the other kids behind him, "WHO DID THAT?!"

"Surely the almighty Elemental Powers should be able to figure out who just nuked him, don'cha think? It's not like it hurt you, anyways," said Kyle. "Besides, you deserve that for what you just did to the Coach." The others glared at Tyler in agreement.

Tyler pushed his shades back into place. "Tell me, or I'll--"

"Or you'll what?" Ambriel shot back at him. "Rearrange the molecules in our books again? Or disintegrate our pants in the halls again? Or how about making all the food in the cafeteria catch fire because you didn't like green onions on your pizza? That was a good one..."

"Shut up, Ambriel!"

"Don't threaten me! I'm the only one around here you can't hurt."

"True..." Tyler said, and then he turned to the side and released a bolt of hard lightning at USA Patriot Act. "But someone else can stand in for you!"

He turned back to Ambriel, smirking. "Now say you're sorry."

"W-what?"

"I'll punish them one by one, until you say you're sorry." When Ambriel only glared at him, he added, "I think Julie might look good in the infirmary." He reached out a noose of energy and pulled it tight around the girl, holding her in midair. "What do you think?"

Ambriel hid her face in her hands. "I'm sorry."

"I didn't quite catch that."

"I'm sorry."

"Good."

"Just leave them alone!" cried another child.

"Ron, Ron, Ron." Elemental Powers dropped the hurting girl to the floor and walked over to the half-alien. "You've gotta stop doing this. Every day it's the same: you get in my face, and I have to make you regret it. Don't you still miss your cape?"

Ron's hand went to his uncloaked shoulder, but he put on a brave front. "N-no. Not really..."

"Then you won't miss your clarinet, either." Tyler snagged the instrument with an electrical field, shoving Ron away with his other hand. "It's made of pretty strong stuff, but I bet it crumbles to dust in about a minute. Whaddya say to that?"

"I say shut up!" Tyler's shades were knocked completely off this time as an emerald wall swept up and slammed him away from Ron, connected to the glove of one very ticked off Kyle Gardner. "I don't care if you beat all of us up, Tyler! WE'VE HAD IT WITH YOU!"

Elemental Powers glared up from the floor at Emerald Gauntlet. "I'm more powerful than all of you put together!" he snarled. "If I wanted to, I could destroy you!"

"Like what you did to Suzi?" Ron said quietly, clutching his clarinet with both hands.

Tyler rose to one knee. "That was an accident!" he protested, beginning to gather energy in one hand.

Kyle floated above him, with several students gathered behind. "Doctor Newby says she might have to stay in that special radiation suit for the rest of her life."

"Her parents can't even hug her now."

"You must've been really proud of yourself. I guess she deserved it because she accidentally spilled milk on your shoes." Ambriel glared down at him like he was something particularly nasty on the sidewalk.

"I didn't mean to!" Why were they all ganging up on him?

"You didn't mean to what?" said Principal Cranston, entering the room. Behind him stood Coach Rockslide, his clothes in rags, with Doctor Newby doing her best to heal the network of cracks in his stony chest. All three adults were glaring at Tyler with the same disgust as the kids had.

"I've called your parents, Mr. Marlocke," Principal Cranston said. "They didn't sound too happy with what you did to Coach Rockslide. Think you've used up your last chance here at PS238."

"No!" Tyler shouted back. "He shouldn't have yelled at me! It's not my fault!" He turned to the others. "Tell him! TELL HIM!"

"Tell him what?" Ron gave him a dirty look.

Kyle crossed his arms. "That you're a spoiled brat who can't even play basketball without frying somebody?"

"I think he already knows that," Ambriel added.

They were all against him, everyone! That tore it. Elemental Powers took up and off, blasting through the ceiling of the gym, screaming angrily: "I HATE YOU ALL!"

When he emerged from the three-mile, .03-second flight through rock and soil into the open air above Excelsior Public School, he found it full of superheroes, whole teams of them... including his parents.

"That's far enough, Tyler." His father, Ultima Powers, spoke sternly and a bit sadly. "We need to talk, son."

Beside him, Sovereign Powers looked deeply ashamed. "This is going to hurt us more than it will you..." she began before the PA speaker of one of the twelve government helicopters started to blare.

«TYLER MARLOCKE, BY ORDER OF THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF METAHUMAN AFFAIRS, YOU ARE HEREBY ORDERED TO SURRENDER TO US. YOU WILL BE FITTED WITH DEVICES THAT WILL NEUTRALIZE YOUR SUPERHUMAN ABILITIES UNTIL A REVIEW BOARD DEEMS YOU RESPONSIBLE ENOUGH TO WIELD THEM FREELY. PLEASE COME WITH US.»

No. No! He was more powerful than them, he shouldn't have to listen to this, it was all their fault, they were all against him, even his parents...

Tyler Marlocke blazed with energy, and half a dozen bolts of lightning arced out blindly toward the surrounding heroes. "NO! NEVER!" he cried...

... and staggered away from the mirror, shaken and confused. What was that?
