basic_powers | Whoniverse: UNIT Barracks

Well, since having that lovely cafeteria date with Martha Jones, Tyler now knows just a bit more about this world than he did when he arrive. He knows that UNIT was created some time ago to combat aliens threats, the man who founded it being called 'The Brigadier' and that Martha joined UNIT because of a job offer right after medical school.

He's also learned that he's not to leave the base without an escort.

What Martha learned was the story that he's sticking to, and some minor details. Tyler was mostly raised by his uncle Ray, the mushroom samples were going for two different sorts of research, toxin and body enhancement. She's also learned that the contents of the sample case will be destroyed if someone tampers with the box.

She also got to see Tyler's reaction to being told he can't leave the base.

Which leads everyone to this current universe, planet, continent, time and location, with a bored and cabin-feverish young man staring up at the ceiling of the barracks and debating the worth od trying to escape using everything he has.

...Back to looking at the replicating ball.

"...what's it's tensile strenght..how far can it bounce or stretch?"

"We haven't found an upper limit yet."

Slightly sheepish.

"The Colonel says I have to find a new place to test that."

There maaaaaay be a slight hole in the ceiling. Um.

Glaaaaance up.

"...you might wanna think about having someone shoot down test samples into the ocean from orbit with controlled rebound angles."

"Good idea."

Bless him, but genius does not always equal intelligent.

In his case...it's...practical experience.

For now he's content to observe the ball and very gently poke it...thank god it's not Flubber.

"Where did you GET this, by the way?"

Unfortunately not. Flubber would open up definite and promising possibilities for energy manufacture.

Sheepishly, "I'm not sure, exactly."

"...Come again?"

"I'm not sure," he repeats, helpfully.

"...in what way...was it some random artifact in a jar? Recon Team picked it up in some alien child's abandoned playroom?"

Excuse his paranoia.

"I'm not sure."

...Luke, we're sorry, but suddenly Tyler is feeling a lot less faithful in those samples staying safe.

"...how often to you do work with things you've never seen before, or know where they come from?"

He shakes his head. "Not often."

"...okay good..."

Tyler is not letting out a sigh of relief.

No sir.

"...I was worried you were getting yourself into danger for a moment there."

"How would I be getting myself into danger?"

He'd like to talk about how unknown elements can really bugger up a plan or series of events... but considering the number of times he's BEEN that unknown element...

Not a whole lot of room to talk about...

"I guess I treat the unknown with a little more paranoia than most. I keep expecting things that come out of my sock drawer to eat my face."

"Most sock drawer inhabitants don't like to eat flesh."

...He is completely serious.

"I turned my back on my sock drawer."

Sympathetic wince.

"That's the part that gets me. It hid in my sock drawer. It was either brilliant or mad, and possibly both."

Pause.

"It does lead to some interesting bedroom habits and conversation though."

"Like what?" Luke says, unthinking.
